The 4 Types of Riddles or Brainteasers

Many people ask me how to solve a riddle because it is a very cool, handy mind skill. One of the first things you can do in solving the problem is noticwe what kind of problem it is. There are 3 different types, and here is each one with an explanation and example.

1. Decpetive Detail Problems
These are probably the most common of riddles. They try to get your mind to wander off thinking about something irrelevant to the question when the answer to the question is really very simple. These are difficult because you need to pick out the key details without being led onto the unneeded ones.

There are 4 brothers in a family and each has a sister. Including the mother and father, how many people are in the family?

Your driving a train and at the first stop 5 people get on. Next stop, 10 people get on and 4 people get off. At the next stop 3 people get off and 12 people get on. Then at the final stop 4 people get on and 9 people get off. How old if the person driving the train?

2. Problems of inducing Structure.
These ask you to find a relation bewtween numbers, words, symbols, or ideas. Analogies, completing the series problems, and relationship questions all fit into this category.

Sun : Day : : Moon : ___

1 2 8 3 4 8 5 _

3. Problems of Arrangement
These problems require you to move parts around until the solution is obtained which is usually only one or a few of the many possible combinations. Most people will try to do these problems with a trial and error appraoch. and Anagrams, which are jumbled words that as you to rearrange the letters.

4. Problems of Transformation
Requires you to go through a series of transformations in order to get to the goal. In these you have to go step by step in order to get to the goal, and they are usually much more difficult than the other 3. One popular example of a problem of arrangement is the popular Rubik's Cube.

You have a 3 cup jar, a 7 cup jar, and a 36 cup jar. If you can take and pour out as much water as you want, how can you measure out exactly 52 cups of water?
